How to add nrw.* to your newsserver

Es gibt auch eine deutsche Version dieser Seite.

This FAQ is written by the Moderation of the Newsgroup nrw.admin.announce to help Newsadmins setting up their newsservers for the nrw.* hierarchy. It also provides a short overview about it.

1. Who administers nrw.*?

In 1994 Sören Sörries and others tried to establish the hierarchie with two groups (nrw.test and nrw.allgemein). The Hierarchie didn't come into life due to bad distribution and interest of the users.

2002 a new try to re-establish the nrw.*-Newsgroups started. The Administration has been taken over by the Moderation of the Newsgroup nrw.admin.announce. Those people are currently:

NameDuty
Marc BrockschmidtControlmessages and substitute Webmaster
Paul HinkWebmaster
Cord BeermannSubstitute for Controlmessages

2. What does the Moderation of the Newsgroup nrw.admin.announce do to administer nrw.*?

The Moderation of the Newsgroup nrw.admin.announce posts Controlmessages for adding (newgroup) and deleting (rmgroup) nrw.*-Newsgroups. Those Messages are archived at <ftp://ftp.isc.org/pub/usenet/control/nrw/> and <http://nrw.usenetverwaltung.de/archiv/alle.html>.

The Document, that specifies the rules of nrw.*, an actual List of the nrw.* Newsgroups and the "checkgroups" Control-Message for nrw.* are posted in regular intervals by the Moderation of the Newsgroup nrw.admin.announce. All Postings of the Moderation of the Newsgroup nrw.admin.announce are archived.

3. Which groups should I provide on my server?

That's your decision. If you get a "full feed", you should accept the Control-messages for nrw.*. Those message are always posted by the Moderation of the Newsgroup nrw.admin.announce (aka "control authority").

4. How should I configure my Newsserver for nrw.*?

The Moderation of the Newsgroup nrw.admin.announce uses PGP to digitally sign newgroup, rmgroup and checkgroups Control-Messages. If you have PGP installed, you should check the Control-Messages, if they are really sent out by the Key-owner, and only if they are, you should honor the requests.

6. How is the configuration for moderated groups?

Usually postings in a moderated Newsgroup were sent to a server, which has a recent List of Moderators. The nrw.*-Hierarchy uses the Server moderators.isc.org.

Please use:

CNews (File "mailpaths")

nrw.* %s@moderators.isc.org

INN (File "moderators")

nrw.*:%s@moderators.isc.org

Please use only "moderators.isc.org" and not "moderators.uu.net", because E-Mail to nrw.*-Moderators are only relayed correctly via moderators.isc.org.

7. My peers can't/don't want to send me nrw.*

Feeds for nrw.* are available from:

8. Are there other sources with useful information?

All relevant links about the hierarchy nrw.* can be found at <http://nrw.usenetverwaltung.de/>.

9. Where can I find a recent list of nrw.*-Newsgroups?

On the 15th day of each month a recent list is posted to nrw.admin.announce, this list can also be found at <http://nrw.usenetverwaltung.de/newsgroups/liste.html>. The checkgroups-control-message (see chapter 2) is also posted to that group. Normally it only shows up in the Pseudo-Newsgroups "control" or "control.checkgroups".
